Oncology Massage Q & A

Q- What is Oncology Massage?
A- An approach to massage therapy applied with compassion and using specialized massage techniques to help people manage their cancer experience.

Q- How is Oncology massage different from other massages?
A- Massage strokes and treatments are modified for the client's goals.  Some desire to relax; some need to sleep better; some wish to relieve nausea and address pain and/or neuropathy symptoms.  Individualized massage plans address the full range of cancer effects on each client's psycho-social, physical, and emotional aspects. Special bolstering is provided for comfort.

Q- Why does a massage therapist need specialized training?
A- Cancer and its treatments may cause or put people at risk for complications from a massage.  A specially trained massage therapist is aware of these and takes necessary precautions.  A clients medical history and current health condition are taken into account so the massage is safe and pleasurable.

Q- Does massage spread cancer?
A- No, it does not.  Medical research has proven massage in no way spreads cancer.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Q & A
Q- What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
A- A very light rhythmic series of strokes on the skin that allow the accumulated lymph fluid to drain through the lymph vessels to the proper ducts.
Q- What is Lymphedema?
A- Lymphedema is a serious condition of localized swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system.  Lymphatic vessels carry wastes, proteins, water and fats to  the lymph nodes, where it is then filtered out. Removal of, or damage to a lymph node in the body can impair the flow of lymph resulting in edema.  When fluid builds up, it can cause abnormal swelling and pain. It also can provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Lymphedema is a life-long condition that cannot be cured, but can be managed with treatments, such as lymphatic drainage massage.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is not for those clients with unmanaged congestive heart failure, acute infection, or acute deep vein thrombosis.
